Why the X6Play caught our attention
Giving a child their first phone can feel like a surprisingly big step. You want to be able to contact them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want unrestricted web browsing, social media and unknown people contacting them.
That’s the problem the Xplora X6Play is trying to solve. It combines some of the most useful parts of a phone with the simplicity of a watch designed specifically for children.
What does the X6Play actually do?
π GPS location
Parents can see their child’s location through the Xplora Guardian app.
π Calls & messages
Children can communicate with contacts approved by their parent or guardian.
π SOS button
A child can quickly contact their designated guardians if they need help.
π« School Mode
Calling can be restricted during school hours while emergency SOS remains available.
π· 5MP camera
Children can take their own photos and videos directly from the watch.
π§ IP68
Water and dust resistance makes it better suited to everyday use by children.
The SOS feature could be the most important one
If your child needs help, they can hold the X6Play’s SOS button for five seconds. Xplora says the watch then calls the two family members configured as administrators one after another.
Their location is also sent to those administrators through a push notification.

No social media. No unrestricted internet.
For many parents, this may be more important than the hardware itself. Xplora says its kids smartwatches don’t provide normal internet access or social media.
Parents also control the watch’s contacts through the Xplora app, helping prevent unwanted callers from contacting the child.
GPS and safe zones
The X6Play can also act as a GPS tracker. Parents can view their child’s location through the Xplora app and create designated safe zones.
If the child leaves one of those areas, the system can send a notification to the parent’s smartphone.
There’s one extra cost you need to know about
Don’t forget the connectivity plan.
Xplora currently lists its Connect 12 Basic plan at Β£7.99 per month with a 12-month minimum contract.
The SIM is what provides the watch’s mobile connectivity, so factor the subscription into the total cost rather than looking only at the Β£179 hardware price.
Who is the X6Play best for?
- Children starting to travel to school or activities independently
- Parents who want GPS location and safe-zone functionality
- Families wanting approved-contact calling and messaging
- Parents who don’t think their child is ready for a smartphone
- Children who would enjoy a camera and activity tracking

DealNab verdict
The X6Play makes the most sense for families who want the communication and location benefits of a phone without immediately introducing unrestricted internet access and social media.
The combination of GPS, safe zones, approved contacts, School Mode and SOS makes it considerably more purposeful than a basic children’s smartwatch.
The main thing to consider is cost. At Β£179 plus the ongoing connectivity plan, this isn’t an impulse purchase. Make sure you’ll actually use the GPS, calling and safety features before buying.
